Celebrations

Four kinds of occasion

Some days are a sail, a tasting or a tour. These are the ones with a reason behind them — and the reason changes how the day is put together. Pick the one you are marking.

And if it is none of these — a proposal, a christening lunch, a company day that has to feel like anything but work, a scattering of ashes at sea — those are planned from the occasion outward rather than from a package inward, which is the only way they work. Tell her what it is.

Anniversaries and surprise parties

The hardest part of a surprise is not the surprise. It is everything that has to be arranged around someone without them noticing — the flowers, the wine, the cake, the catering, the timing with the captain, and a cover story that holds until the last minute.

One tenth anniversary was arranged with the husband over weeks while his wife believed they were going out for dinner nearby. Another was arranged the other way round, by a wife, with the children aboard.

Aboard An evening or a full day Arranged in confidence

Birthday parties

A birthday at sea is a long day rather than a party with an end time: swimming, paddleboards, something proper to eat at anchor, and the cake brought out when the light goes.

They have worked for a group of friends in their twenties and for families with children aboard, which is the useful thing to know about them — the day bends to whoever is on the boat.

Bachelorette days

The boat takes six to ten, and that number decides the shape of the day more than anything else does: a group small enough that nobody ends up on the edge of it. Out in the morning, anchored somewhere clear through the hottest part of the afternoon, back as the light goes — or two days, with a night at anchor, if there is time for it.

What goes on board is decided with you, and so is whether the day is a loud one.

Weddings

Rarely the whole wedding, and that is deliberate: what she plans is the part of it that happens on the water. The couple and the people closest to them, out at anchor, with the ceremony or the hours after it built around the light rather than around a schedule.

Everything that a wedding day normally hands to four different suppliers — the flowers, the table, the food, the cake, the timing with the captain — is arranged in one place, which is the part couples say afterwards mattered most.

One of them was dressed before anyone came aboard: white along the rails, gypsophila at the shrouds, tables laid on the foredeck. It ran past sunset, and the lights stayed on over the water.

I told my wife we were simply going out for dinner near Delta Falirou. What she didn’t know was that Maria had been secretly helping me organize an unforgettable anniversary experience on a yacht for our family. … The moment my wife realized what was actually happening is something I will never forget. …

Ronnie · A tenth anniversary at sea

The captain was the friendliest and kindest of men, and Maria took care of everything — the food she ordered and laid out so beautifully on the table, the flowers, the cake, the photographs — all of it with tremendous care and love. Even my eldest daughter said, “Mum, I will never forget this day.” …

Alexandra · A surprise anniversary

A wonderful experience for young and old alike. Faultless organization, excellent service and a lovely atmosphere. Our particular thanks to Maria for her kindness and her care. We recommend her without reservation.

Alexandra · A day for all ages

Perfect organization at every event I have been to so far.
